The Walk to Emmaus is a 3 day spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all." 

The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo (pronounced cur-SEE-o) Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity." 

The Walk to Emmaus is grounded theologically and institutionally in The Upper Room ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church.  

The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. 

To get involved in Emmaus, each person must have a sponsor who has already attended Emmaus him- or herself. If you have a friend who has been to Emmaus, ask your friend to tell you about his or her experience with the program. 

There are currently 12 Emmaus Communities in NC.  We are very fortunate to have had 50+ people from the Hebron community participate in the Walk to Emmaus through the Pamlico Emmaus Community out of Washington, NC.  We participate in the Pamlico Community because it is the one that our previous Pastor Carson Tyson helped start.  It is for men and women 20 or older.  There are 2 men's walks per year and 2 to 3 women's walks per year.  They are generally held in March and October.

Chrysalis

There is also a teenage version of the Walk to Emmaus called Chrysalis for boys and girls of any Christian denomination from age 15 who have completed the 9^th grade to age 19.  The Chrysalis name comes from the fact that before a caterpillar can become a butterfly it must go through a growth stage during which it is called a "chrysalis." On the surface it may not look like much is happening, but the delicate chrysalis process changes the fuzzy caterpillar into an awesome butterfly with wings of intricate designs and intense colors. The chrysalis process symbolizes how Christ can transform you into something beyond your dreams. It happens when you grow beyond yourself, opening your life to Jesus' power and love. 

In Chrysalis you will spend three days with other people your age in worship, prayer, fellowship, creative expression, recreation, singing, and discussion. You'll experience the love of God through prayers and the acts of service from a loving support community. Think of it as three days for you to discover or re-discover you spiritual self, to analyze and realize who you are in Christ. We invite you to join in a flight or journey, an exciting three days of experiencing God's love in a fresh new way. Spread your wings! 

Chrysalis is usually held Mid July and Late Dec.  There is not a Chrysalis Flight yet in the Pamlico community so we have participated in the Albemarle Chrysalis Community located in Elizabeth City, NC.  We have had 7 youth from Hebron attend thus far.

Both the Emmaus Walks and the Chrysalis Flights are definitely a wonderful gift from God.  We encourage all of you to give it prayerful consideration.  Once you decide it is an opportunity you do not want to miss, PLEASE get in touch with anyone from the church that has Walked or Flew and they will get you a sponsor and get you on the road to an Emmaus/Chrysalis experience.
